Lucca and its beauties
The antique Roman city of Lucca still resides within its renaissance high walls. Is located at the foot of the Apuan Alps and is less than half an hour from the coast of Versilia. A guided walk will bring you through the old town of the 100 churches and its medieval towers. Stroll from piazza to piazza, and absorb the city’s history through its architecture.
The Duomo, Lucca’s Romanesque cathedral, from the 8th century, features a façade from the 12th century with elaborate reliefs and columns. The gothic interior includes an image of Christ on the cross, il Volto Santo, supposedly carved by Nicodemus, a purported witness of the crucifixion. The Duomo also boasts Tintoretto's magnificent painting of the Last Supper and a marvellous marble-carved monument by Jacopo della Quercia.
The city also shows its ancient history: from the trace of the Roman amphitheater that can be seen in the shape of the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro to the archeological remains under the 12th century church of Saints Giovanni and Reparata (the first city cathedral), to the various towers and villas from the 12th to 16th centuries; Piazza of San Michele with its Church of San Michele in Foro, the Basilica of San Frediano as well as the Clock Tower and Guinigi Tower, to name just a few.
In this tour, you’ll have also free time in Lucca to explore, do some shopping and take a walk around the area of the walls, completely walkable. They have in essence become a park that surrounds the city and blocks out more modern life.
